Continued need for NextGen

Albany International Airport was victim to weather twice in two nights in the month of October.  Heavy snow and rain took out the ILS, diverting two planes to other airports.

The airport manager was able to get his technition out to fix the ILS as soon possible, the down time was no more than 45 minutes both IFR nights.  The airport manager said that the equiptment does not go out on a regular basis and that they fix any problem as fast as they come up.  Albany will always have heavy snow and rain.  The ILS is bound to go down again.  One solution: get rid of the ILS.  The implementation and use of NextGen will eliminate failed ground equiptment as it is satellite based...snow does not stand a chance.

  1. Yes in deed.
NextGen will surely solve such ground problems. However, I believe that diverting flights to alternative airports are mandatory in similar emergency situations. It is part of standards of operation to avoid landing in weather conditions like that. So, the question remains: Would the industry's regulators change their standards and procedures once they have NextGen equipment ready to go??

  2. interesting point made here, We need to start updating are equipment and our systems to be efficient and yet reliable, and from all that is said about it, next gen is the answer to that.

  3. NextGen would have prevented this situation. However, as much as I'd love to have NextGen online what's not to say that there might not be a failure in the new technology. What backups might be required....old technology?
